PRESENTATION: Understanding Mental Health – Smashing the Stigma and Freeing Those Suffering in Silence

In this extremely interactive, engaging, and judgement-free workshop students will have the opportunity to openly discuss their perspectives about mental health. They will be on their feet, interacting in groups and come on stage to share their group’s thoughts and ideas as they develop a positive understanding of what it means to have mental health. Collectively, the students will erase the stigma and normalize mental health conditions. Zach will do this by educating them and sharing my story of mental health challenges, so they feel comfortable seeking help early when they need it. This workshop is a great introduction to the topic of mental health because it allows students to examine their current thoughts and feelings about mental health, while offering a clear definition for them to build a positive foundation of understanding.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the presentation, participants will be able to:

1. Understand that mental health is something we all have and is a spectrum that we all move back and forth on based on various factors in our life.
2. Recognize the various signs and symptoms of anxiety and depression in ourselves and others, as well as equip the students with the appropriate talk tracks to encourage appropriate help seeking behavior.
3. Apply mental health best practices they can immediately implement to promote positive brain health to manage stress, anxiety and depression.
4. Understand the resources that are available to seek help when they need it.

Call to Action:
Challenge each student to recognize mental health as a normal part of society and to always seek help when necessary.
